About Makayla

Makayla Francois is an Articling Student at Gerami Law PC, having joined the firm in October 2025. She completed her Juris Doctor at the University of Ottawa, where she has excelled academically and contributed to legal research and advocacy.

Makayla’s background includes an Honors Bachelor of Applied Science in Justice Studies and a Diploma in Community and Justice Studies from the University of Guelph-Humber. Her legal experience spans roles as a law student at Home Counsel Legal Services Corporation and the Children’s Aid Society of Ottawa, where she supported counsel in court, drafted legal documents, and provided legal services on child protection legislation. She has also served as a Research Assistant with the Refugee Hub Knowledge Team, contributing to research, policy, and programming for refugee protection solutions.

Makayla is actively involved in the legal community. She previously served as VP of Finance and VP of Mentorship & Community Outreach for the Black Law Students’ Association. Her certifications include Practice Ready credentials in Real Estate Law and Family Law, Ontario Child Welfare Training, Vicarious Trauma Awareness, and Mental Health First Aid.

Makayla is committed to supporting clients through Canada’s complex immigration system and contributes to Gerami Law PC’s mission of providing effective, compassionate, and principled legal representation.
